"Invading Czechoslovakia and repressing the Prague Spring was an act of violence and shame," Hiller said.
Russia and other Warsaw Pact countries, including Hungary, invaded Czechoslovakia on August 21, 1968 to stop the country's political liberalisation.
"It was an act of aggression, an attack on more freedom in thought and in action," Hiller said. "This is so even if Hungarian troops invaded in part because of Soviet pressure."
Hiller said the events of 1968 show that the Soviet regime was not suited for change and established the foundation for further intellectual and political movements in Eastern as well as Western Europe.
