Istvan Hiller said that Hungary should continue the initiative of holding year-long events in other countries to promote its culture, and the next target should be the Gulf region, for instance Qatar and Oman.
He noted that Hungary had held 135 events in 38 venues with 490 performers and participants in Washington and New York over the past year. "The year was a clear success and the most exhaustive presentation of Hungarian culture to date," said Hiller.
The minister said that part of its success lay in the fact that the programmes had been concentrated in two of America's metropolises rather than being dispersed.
He noted that concerts and exhibitions had taken place to great acclaim in icon venues such as the Carnegie Hall, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Lincoln Centre. Critical reviews appeared in the Washington Times, the New York Times and the New Yorker.
