 The Gömböc

At least 70 million visitors, including 65 million Chinese, are expected to come to the world fair, where 192 countries and 50 international organisations will be present, said Huszty after arriving in China to start work on the interior of the Hungarian pavilion.

The 1,000-square-metre pavilion, with 700,000 square metres of exhibition space, was designed to resemble the Gömböc, a Hungarian invention that rights itself when in stable equilibrium, not because of weight, but because of its shape.

The pavilion will host a number of different cultural programmes, including exhibitions, concerts and arts performances. An exhibition of photographs by the Hungarian-born photographer Robert Capa will take place, the Szeged Contemporary Ballet will perform as will the ExperiDance troupe, and screenings of Hungarian animated films will be shown.

The pavilion, with a capacity for 400 people, will be open 16 hours a day. Tickets for the fair will be available from April, when the fair starts its pilot run.

The world fair will have a Hungarian day on August 22, shortly after the country celebrates its national holiday, and there will be a European day on May 9.
