Hungarian ambassador to the United States Béla Szombati presented Rasmussen with the honour.
The Katzen Arts Center, part of the American University, hosted an exhibition of work by Lajos Varga in the spring as part of Extremely Hungary, the Hungarian cultural season in New York and Washington. In 2006, the centre hosted an exhibition of photographs timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. In the same year the Hungarian pianists Edit Klukon, Dezső Ránki and György Ádám performed at the centre.
