Hungary supports renovation of St. John Capistran house in Italy

The brick-and-stone house in which Giovanni da Capestrano was born in 1386 and which has been a popular destination for Hungarian pilgrims, was badly damaged by an earthquake in April this year.

Hungary's contribution will be used to reinforce the two-storey medieval structure, replace the roof, repair plasterwork and renew the building's systems, the ministry told MTI in a statement.

Giovanni, a learned Franciscan priest, is remembered as one of the leaders of the crusade against the Ottoman Empire at the battle of Belgrade in 1456. He died of bubonic plague following the famous victory.
