The five-day choir competition - which organisers bill as being the only such contest for contemporary choral music in the world - has attracted some 1,000 singers.
Organiser Csaba Siklosi told MTI that 24 choirs from 15 countries, including China, Canada, the Philippines, European and South American countries, had already arrived in Debrecen and were preparing for the opening event.
The opening concert's programme offers Gyorgy Selmeczi's oratory based on Shakespearean passages specially composed for the occasion.
