Iska's Journey was not the only prize-winning film to be passed over: the Italian Cannes Film Festival Winner Gomorrah also failed to make the cut.
The Academy Award nominees for this year's Best Foreign Language Film are the French school drama The Class, the Israeli animated feature Waltz with Bashir, the Austrian film Revanche, the Canadian film The Necessities of Life, Germany's The Baader Meinhof Complex, Departures from Japan, Tear This Heart Out from Mexico, Everlasting Moments from Sweden and 3 Monkeys from Turkey.
Sixty-five countries submitted films to be considered for Oscar nominations. Nine films were short-listed by Academy members, and these will be narrowed down to five by next week.
Last year, German thriller The Counterfeiters won Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.
