Jewish Summer Festival Promises Rich Programme

In addition to the capital, events will also take place at venues in the countryside, said Gusztáv Zoltai, who heads the Hungarian Association of Jews Congregations.

 
The Norwegian-born singer Bente Kahan will open the festival with a performance at the Rumbach Street synagogue. The concert will also feature the children's chorus of the White Stork Synagogue in Wroclaw.
 
On August 27, the Hundred-Member Gypsy Orchestra will perform in the Dohány Street Synagogue. The synagogue will also serve as the venue for an international cantor concert, featuring Itzhak Meir Helfgot.

For the first time, the festival will feature an all-children's programme on August 26. Shlomo Artzi, one of Israel's best known pop singers will perform during the day.

 
Other performers at the festival will inlcude the pianist Keren Hanan, the Gólem Theatre and the Hagesher Group, which incorporates elements of jazz, hip-hop and reggae with traditional Jewish music. Lovers of klezmer will be pleased to see the Budapest Klezmer Band and the Kálmán Balogh Gipsy Cimbalom Band on the lineup.
 
Outside of Budapest, in Kiskunhalas, a fashion show will take place and the Gólem Theatre will perform. In Veszprém, Eszter Horgas, Béla Szakcsi Lakatos and György Vukán will perform a Gershwin evening. And the Wroclaw Congregation Children's Chorus will perform in Nagykőrös and Nyíregyháza.
