The Kieselbach Gallery aims to make 19th and 20th century photographs valuable art in Hungary too. The first steps toward achieving this goal were a block of photographs in an auction of paintings and an auction devoted entirely to photographs.
The Second Auction of Photos offers images from the 19th century to today. Among the photographs are historical and documentary photos, art photos and portraits.
Starting prices are high for Hungary, but not in international comparison - At the News Stand, Paris (1934), a photograph by André Kertész, among the greatest photographers who ever lived, is listed in the catalogue for HUF 1.6 million. (A photograph by Kertész offered at the First Auction of Photos in the spring went for HUF 3 million.) At the News Stand was printed by Kertész himself, as evidenced by the stamps on the back of the photograph as well as the stock. The other photograph by Kertész in the auction, a landscape in Bretagne, starts at HUF 380,000.
