The Esterházy palace of Fertőd |
A record number of tickets were sold for a series of early music concerts at the palace of Eszterháza at the end of August. The concerts, which celebrated Joseph Haydn's more than 20 years at the court of Hungary's Prince Miklós Esterházy, were broadcast on the radio in Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Serbia.
The programme included renowned interpreters of early music such as Alexey Lubimov, Simon Standage and Bart van Oort. Many of the performers said they want to return to Hungary for the concert series next year.
The city of Esztergom's first Liszt Festival, which also took place at the end of August, attracted more than 2,000 music lovers. An organ recital by István Baróti was sold out and a concert by the pianist Gergely Bogányi drew big crowds. Among the highlights of the festival was an orchestral version of Liszt's Esztergom Mass, performed in the city's massive cathedral.
