The life-size statue, a work by sculptor Imre Varga, depicts the prolific writer of novels, essays and autobiographies sitting on a broken clock-face.

"We are unveiling the statue of a man who struggled against both totalitarian ideologies and states of the 20th century with words and actions," Budapest Mayor Gabor Demszky said at the ceremony.

The mayor noted that several world famous scientists, including Leo Szilard, John Neumann and Eugene Wigner, had spent their childhood in the 6th district.

"Hungary would be much richer if anti-Semitism had not forced them to emigrate," Demszky said.
