La La La Human Steps Premieres in Budapest

English

Founded by the world famous choreographer Édouard Lock, known for productions that break down recognised forms, the company will perform its most recent work, entitled Amjad, which premiered in April of this year.

Lock's inspiration comes from such well known Romantic works as Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. He brings tradition and modernity under a single umbrella by reconceiving and reinterpreting them. These works have been "deconstructed" and "reassembled," adapting their messages to modern choreography and music.

In Lock's newest work, he continues his adventure in rediscovering the body as an extreme and abstract entity. "His objective is the liberation of the body from every functionality to the point of abstraction as romantic ballet does," writes the French Libération.

To perform Amjad, La La La Human Steps has assembled a team that comprises ballet dancers who are highly experienced in contemporary techniques. Among them are Andrea Boardman, who for ten years was the leading dancer of the Grand Ballets Canadiens, and Xuan Cheng who won the 2004 Shanghai International Ballet Contest. Both are now members of the La La La company.

Gavin Bryars has reinterpreted the original Tchaikovsky works and adapted them for performance by a live chamber orchestra. In some parts of the compositions, experimental electronic instruments designed by Blake Hargreaves can be heard. The sets are the work of famous contemporary Canadian sculptor Armand Vaillancourt.
