The Pathseeker, which was published in Hungary some 30 years ago, follows shortly after the publication in English of another early Kertész work, Detective Story, which was favourably reviewed in the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. The Pathseeker follows "the commissioner" who revisits the scene of an old crime while on the way to a seaside resort.
"The commissioner has returned to the scene of the 20th century's greatest crime, and what he finds subtly reveals the various ways the Holocaust continues to haunt him and all Europeans... The commissioner's own role in the atrocities -- as victim or as perpetrator or as something else entirely -- is never made explicit. Kertész reminds us that some things can never be named," the reviewer writes.
The Pathseeker has been published as part of Melville House's series The Contemporary Art of the Novella. It was translated into English by Tim Wilkinson, who also translated Detective Story.
