Hiller made the decision based on the recommendation of an evaluation committee made up of professionals. The recommendation was supported by the museum's staff council and the union.

Under Baán's watch, the Museum of Fine Arts has organised a number of large-scale temporary exhibitions that have drawn record crowds. He oversaw a show of El Greco, Velázquez and Goya in 2006, another of works by Van Gogh in 2007, and the photography exhibition Soul and Body in 2008. Baán was instrumental in introducing the museum's Museum+ programme, which offers visitors special tours of exhibitions accompanied by other thematic events every other Thursday evening. The museum started its Geniuses and Masterpiece series, launched a museum teachers programme and expanded its range of services headed by Baán.
