Pecs will be European Capital of Culture along with the two other cities of Essen and Istanbul throughout the year.
Pecs is well prepared for the programme series and every effort will be made to ensure that the city should properly represent European traditions and culture, the city's mayor said at the event held at the Hungarian cultural institute in Vienna.
Cultural director of the Pecs2010 events, Tamas Szalay said that Pecs is a city for regional cooperation, it represents a "cultural gate" to the Balkans, and it is characterised by multiculturalism, renewal and lively public areas.
