Inspired by New York hip hop as well as graffiti culture, Haring started his career with chalk drawings in the New York subway. He used simple techniques to create figures that have a movement and a rhythm all their own.
Haring addressed the contemporary age of consumerism with an unsubtle but effective irony in his work. He also had no fear of using non-traditional means to bring his work to a broader public.
