Mafilm will pay for the cost of the 2,000-square-metre studio -- double the size of the one it is replacing -- with an insurance settlement, loans and EU grants, Ferenc Grunwalsky, who heads the Hungarian Moving Pictures Foundation (MMK), Mafilm's sole owner, told business daily Napi Gazdasag.
The studio aims to serve Hungarian productions and mid-scale European productions.
The announcement of Mafilm's plans come shortly after US investors said they would build three studios in Mogyoród, just outside of Budapest, in the spring. Greenhill Filmstudio, headed by Hungarian director Tamás Sas, also said recently it would bild a HUF 2 billion film studio and media centre at the site of an abandoned coal mine near Pécs (SW Hungary).
Hungary' studio "boom" has been inspired by the success of the recently completed Sándor (Alexander) Korda Studio in Etyek, on the outskirts of the capital.
