The memorial took place at the Hanna Szenes Park in Budapest's District VII. It was attended by Israel's ambassador to Hungary Yahel Vilan and Szenes's relatives.
"This is a day to pay tribute to Zionist resistance fighters, their courage and honour - symbolised by the short life of Hanna Szenes, or Anikó, or Hannah Senesh, who sacrificed her life for these virtues" museologist András Szécsényi said.
Szenes was one of 17 Hungarian Jews living in Palestine who were trained by the British army to parachute into Yugoslavia during the Second World War in order to help save the Jews of Hungary, who were being sent to the concentration camps. Szenes was arrested at the Hungarian border, imprisoned and tortured. But she refused to reveal the details of her mission. She was executed by firing squad on November 7, 1944.
In Israel, Szenes is regarded as a national heroine. Streets have been named after her and her poetry is well known.
