Mayor Commissions Overture for Pan-European Picnic Anniversary

English

 Sándor Szokolay

On August 19, 1989, Hungarians organised a symbolic opening of the border between Hungary and Austria near the Hungarian village of Sopronpuszta. During the "picnic", more than 600 citizens of the former East Germany passed unheeded across the border into Austria.

Szokolay, who lives in Sopron, said he was happy to accept the commission. He will write a 10- to 12-minute piece that evokes the drama of transformation.

The piece will be performed in the Fertőrákos Cave Theatre.
