The applications came from 47 countries and included features, shorts, animated films, experimental films and documentaries. The films will compete for a EUR 15,000 purse.
In addition to the 84 films in competition, the committee picked seven films to be shown as part of the information programme.
Mediawave will have an international jury, comprising Romanian film critic Laurentin Braton, the Hungarian director Szabolcs Hajdu, Russian documentary director Sergei Loznitsa, and director of the Cork International Film Festival Eimear O'Herlihy.
Mediawave's organisers held a special auction early in the week to attract sponsors for the festival.
The ten-day event, held in Győr, in northwest Hungary, will feature jazz and folk music performances in addition to film screenings.
