MEP Praises Choice of Pécs for 2010 Title

Hungary has made a significant move towards decentralisation by choosing Pécs ahead of Budapest in the competition for the title, Bono said. Pécs is a fine example of the bridge between Western and Southeast Europe, he added.

Pécs can count on the cooperation of other countries in its preparations to carry the title European Capital of Culture 2010, Bono said. "If several regions join forces to achieve a goal, it will bring considerable results," he said.

Bono welcomed the fact that the local university would play an important role in Pécs's programme when it carries the title. He also applauded plans to refurbish the city's squares and parks.

Bono, who is French, said there were seven cities in France competing for the title European Capital of Culture 2013 - the next year the country shares the rotating title.
