MOL Jazz Festival Starts Wednesday

The Modern Art Orchestra, led by the trumpeter Kornél Fekete-Kovács, will open the festival at the Palace of Arts with a programme featuring compositions especially written for the occasion. The French clarinettist and saxophonist Louis Sclavis will follow up with an original composition to accompany the silent film Dans la nuit.

 
Other venues that will host performances include the Közraktár tent, the Europa jazz ship docked near Nehru park, the Sanyi és Aranka Theatre, the Pinceszínház theatre and several cafés along Ráday Street. The Hotel Ibis will host jazz concerts free of charge during the festival, and the MOL Jazz Lounge, set up in a parking lot at 9-11 Közraktár Street, will target a younger audience with jazz DJs.
 
Some of the best Hungarian jazz musicians will team up with foreign artists to play what will be unforgettable gigs. The Hungarian Gábor Winand and the Armenian-Hungarian David Yengibarjan, Tibor Eichinger, Gábor Gadó and Zoltán Lantos, together with his band Mirrorworld, will be joined by the Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset. Aarset will also perform with his own band on the Europa jazz ship.
 
Among the foreign acts on the programme will be the British pianist Dave Stapleton with his quintet, the Danish group JazzKamikaze, Juhani Aaltonen from Finland, Heinz Sauer and Michael Wollny from Germany and Trio Grande from Belgium. The Austrian saxophonist Wolfgang Puschnig will play with the American bass player Jamaaladeen Tacuma, who has peformed in Hungary several timers. The American drummer Rashied Ali, who has played with jazz legends Don Cherry, Archie Shepp and many others, will perform with his own quintet.
 
Viktor Tóth and his quartet will play at the Take Five jazz club on three nights in preparation for a new recording with Hamid Drake and Mátyás Szandai. The saxophonist István Grencsó will perform with his Real Time Collective, the guitarist Gábor Gadó will join up with the saxophonist Christophe Monniot and the bass player Sébastien Boisseau from France. The vibraphone player Tommy Vig is also expected to perform.
 
The festival will conclude with a concert at the Palace of Arts by the vocalist Gábor Winand, who will perform with the Dutch pianist Ramón Valle and trombonist Eric Vloeimans. A performance by a French quintet featuring the pianists Stéphan Oliva and Francois Raulim will follow.
