Munkácsy's Christ Before Pilate

The exhibition, in the grand hall of the Cistercian Order?s Lajos Nagy Secondary School, is one of the highlights of the Pécs2010 programme, said Mayor Zsolt Páva. The show would not have come together without the ?kind recommendation and cooperation? of the Déri Museum in Debrecen, he added.

Miklós Szentkirályi, chief restoration specialist at Budapest?s Museum of Fine Arts, said Munkácsy invested 16 years of work in the canvases ? Ecce Homo, Golgotha and Christ Before Pilate. Ecce Homo is special because it was the last painting Munkácsy made, at a time when he was very ill, he added.

Christ Before Pilate is on loan from the Hamilton Gallery in Canada, Golgotha has been lent by the Hungarian-born collector Imre Pákh, and Ecce Homo has been provided by the Déri Museum.

The trilogy can be seen by the public every day of the week except Monday from 10am until 6pm until October 31.
