A declaration of intent on cooperation to establish the museum was signed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the inventor Ernő Rubik on Friday.

Orbán said he hoped the showcase of Hungarian invention would become a symbol of the renaissance in Hungary in the 21st century. He added that the Hungarian inventions in use around the world today offered a kind of freedom from a linguistic insularity particular to Hungarians.

The idea for the museum was born at the end of 2011, said government commissioner for the project Balázs Fürjes.

Péter Radnai, the project?s chief creative consultant, said a number of important Hungarians had already been involved in the plan, including the architect József Finta, the museum director László Baán and the capital?s mayor István Tarlós.

A tender for the design of the museum will be called next year and it could be built between 2014 and 2017.

Rubik expressed hope that the cornerstone of the museum could be laid in 2014, when he turns 70 and his puzzle, known the world over, becomes 40.
