Museum of Applied Arts Opens Permanent Exhibition

The exhibition is the first in a long time to consist of a general assortment of carefully selected objects from the museum?s stores, said Imre Takács, who was appointed director of the museum two weeks ago for a five-year term.

The exhibit, which contains more than 400 objects, will be interactive as well: computer terminals will fill in visitors on the background of the objects, giving information about who they may have belonged to, and when, Culture Minister András Bozóki said at the opening.

Finance Minister János Veres, also attending the opening, said the exhibition?s objects reflect Hungary's economic and financial development over the years, and they also show how sponsorship has helped the museum build its collection over the past century. He added that sponsors today could continue to help the museum?s collection grow.

Included among the items on display are a 400-year-old jewellery seahorse, whose paper-thin shell ornamentation has survived the centuries, a shoe alleged to have been worn by Madame, with white socks, as fashion at the time dictated, and one of the first automated music machines in history.
