Museum of Fine Arts Gets First Ancient Mosaic

English

The mosaic, depicting Orpheus and dating from 250-350, was discovered in Tunisia in the 1940s. Its owner later moved to France, and it was put up for auction a few years ago. The Fine Arts Museum paid HUF 30 million for the mosaic.

The mosaic will be shown as part of the ?Season?s Exhibition? from the middle of March until 28 May. Other works on display at the exhibition include Tizian's ?Mary With Her Child and Saint Paul?, which is on long-term deposit with the museum by its owner, who presented it for last year?s Tizian and the Venice Madonna exhibition. The painting was first attributed to Tizian by Museum of Fine Arts art historian Vilmos Tátrai.

Another new painting on deposit at the museum is ?An Allegory of Colonial Power?, by lesser-known Dutch painter Willem de Poorter. The de Poorter painting was purchased by the Walker-Williams Investment Group.
