The exhibition features 36 paintings, 50 graphic works and three tapestries. A separate room has been dedicated to Hundertwasser's architecture. The works span most of Hundertwasser's life: the earliest piece - a street scene in Vienna - was created when the artist was just 15. Another work, made in honour of Van Gogh, was completed just one year before Hundertwasser's death in 2000, said exhibition curator Katalin Bodor. She added that the latter had never before been lent for a temporary exhibition.
Hundertwasser made an impact not only in the area of painting and graphic arts, but also in industrial design and architecture, said museum director László Baán. The exhibition aims to present a comprehensive view of the artist's work, he said.
Most of the items in the exhibition are from KunstHausWien, which preserves Hundertwasser's estate. The works are insured for HUF 1 billion, Baán said.
In addition to his work, which even includes an environmentally-friendly toilet, the exhibition aims to show Hundertwasser's philosophy and his way of life, manifesting the creation of a harmony of humanism, man and the environment embracing him.
The exhibition runs until January 13, 2008.
