The exhibition, entitled In Praise of Women, will open on March 20, during the Budapest Spring Festival. It shows works by Much as a well as a selection of similar drawings, paintings and photographs from his French, American and Czech contemporaries.

Museum director Mária Mihály said the exhibition is the last in a series in which the museum has explored the "golden age" of painting at the end of the 19th century.

Earlier, the museum hosted exhibitions of work by Ferdinand Hodler and Gustave Moreau.

In Praise of Women includes works from the Morva Gallery in Brno, the Museum of Applied Arts in Prague and the Mucha Gallery, also in Prague.

Among the highlights of the exhibition is a poster advertising a theatre protection of Gismonda starring Sarah Bernhardt, said Petr Stembera of the Museum of Applied Arts in Prague. The poster, painted in 1894-1895, made Mucha an overnight sensation in France and marked the start of a long cooperation with Bernhardt, he added.

The Czech Republic, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU, is the guest of honour at this year's Budapest Spring Festival. On this occasion, the country is presenting itself to Hungary with a series of programmes entitled Our Guests in the Czech Republic, said Jaromír Plísek, the Czech ambassador to Hungary.

Róbert Gál of the Czech Centre said some of the most exciting events on the programme would be performances of works by Bohuslav Martinu, one of the most important Czech musicians of the 20th century, at the Palace of Arts. Exhibitions will also be held at the Hungarian House of Photography, the Czech Centre, the Artitude Gallery and the Nessim Gallery, all in the vicinity of Andrássy Street.

At the Millenáris, across the Danube, an exhibition of work by the famous Czech illustrator Zdenk Miler will be shown. The venue will also host a Czech beer festival and a concert by the Jana Koubková Quartet.
