Museums Mark International Museum Day in Budapest

English

The gathering of museums in the courtyard of the National Museum is taking place for the 12th time this year. Last year's event drew 20,000 visitors.

This year the National Museum wants to target younger audiences by offering handicraft workshops, puppet performances and concerts. The festival will also feature a Street of Crafts where artisans put on demonstrations and sell their goods.

Among the concerts at the event will be one by a choir formed by museum staff. The alternative bands Sziámi and Pál Utcai Fiúk will close the festival.

Visitors to the festival will also be able to vote on the Museum of the Year Award, started by the Pulszky Society, based on events and exhibitions organised in 2006.

UNESCO named May 18 International Museum Day in 1977. The celebrations have a different theme each year, this year's being Museums and Universal Heritage.
