National Library Shows Hungary's Most Magnificent Tomes

English

The Philostratus Corvina will be presented to the public, for the first time in twenty-five years, as the first of a series of exhibitions by the National Széchényi Library of famous Hungarian tomes.

In a brand new display room, the library will show a different book every three months, including the Illustrated Chronicles, the Pray Codex, the original hand-written copy of the Hungarian national anthem and many more, said Barbara Kiss, the library?s communications director.

The Philostratus Corvina is the work of Philostratus, a leading third-century Athenian sophist, and his nephew. It contains descriptions of the lives of ancient heroes and philosophers and descriptions of a collection of paintings in Naples.

Also on display at the exhibition will be a thirty-square-metre, three-piece modern tapestry composition bearing the Corvinus seal. The tapestry was made by the Hungarian Association of Tapestry Artists.

The library will also introduce the first of it its Digital Treasury CDs, which contains the items in the exhibition, allowing visitors to ?page through? the Philostratus.
