National Museum to Show Recently Acquired Capa Photographs

English

The Hungarian state allowed the National Museum to purchase 985 Robert Capa photographs from the International Center of Photography in New York in 2008. The images include 48 original paper positives and a limited series of 937 40X50 centimetre paper positives dubbed the Robert Capa Master Selection. The series was reproduced just three times: one is in New York, another in Japan and the third is now in the country of Capa's birth.

Robert Capa takes a photograph of the writer John Steinbeck during a trip to the Soviet union in 1947. The image is one of almost a thousand recently acquired from the International Center of Photography by the Hungarian National Museum.

The International Center of Photography donated 20 enlarged images from the Master Selection as well as five Capa portraits with the purchase to give the National Museum a total of 1010 photographs.

The exhibition will move to Budapest's Ludwig Museum from July 2 until October 11. Afterward, it will travel to ten cities around Hungary.
