Neue Zürcher Zeitung Praises György Konrád Book

English

Martin Meyer said the exceptional book ?holds a mirror to the ruptures and catastrophes of the 20th century and then to the ?happy end? of 1989?.

Rhythmic movements back and forth create tension between the power of history and everyday life, the work of the writer and his family, the stability linked to certain locations and his stays abroad, Meyer said, explaining the title.

The source of the miracle that surrounds Konrád?s writing is the result of an alternating perspective, as the description of everyday moments ? like a walk or playing with his children ? is mixed with his ideas about and experiences with politics, he added.

Pendulum was published in German by Suhrkamp earlier this year.
