From September 1, Zoltan E. Bretter will take over the leadership of the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Bucharest, Ildiko Markus will lead in Helsinki, Istvan Nagy in Moscow and Ildiko Moger in Sofia, said Eva Lauter.

Bretter said he wanted the Hungarian institutes to play a leading role in promoting dialogue between people of different ethnic background living next to each other in Romania.

Moger said the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Sofia was founded 60 years ago and the anniversary is planned to be celebrated with literary, film and dance events.

Markus said that mentioning the Finnish-Hungarian linguistic relationship is no longer sufficient to promote Hungarian events in Finland because new generations are only attracted by topical and quality events. Classic Hungarian culture is already well known in Finland and Hungary's contemporary fine arts, industrial design and architecture should be introduced, she added.

Nagy plans to set up a team of culture professionals, sociologists and literary experts to assess receptiveness for Hungarian culture in Russia.

All four new directors also raised the topic of co-operation between Hungarian cultural institutes abroad and said it was important to make plans in a network structure which can be co-ordinated by the Balassi Institute.
