Pannon Philharmonic director Zsolt Horváth presented Zoltán Peskó at a press conference in Budapest's Palace of Arts (MUPA). Peskó is replacing Zsolt Hamar, who resigned.
Peskó said a performance by the Pannon Philharmonic at MUPA in September, among other things, had convinced him the contract with Pécs would be worth it. "The sound will decide whether there is a common denominator," he added.
Peskó said he would give preference to works by contemporary composers and by Hungarian composers in the orchestra's concerts.
Peskó is returning to Pécs after working with the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, RAI in Milan, the opera orchestras in Lisbon and Rome, and other orchestras.
Zoltán Kocsis, the director of the National Philharmonic Orchestra and the first guest conductor of the Pannon Philharmonic, said the choice of Peskó for the job could not have been better. Peskó is a real "worker's conductor", of which there are few, he added.
The Pannon Philharmonic will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2011.
