The son of a jazz trumpeter, Rennie started playing tenor saxophone in his father's various bands early on. Later he formed various funk bands, playing sax and keyboards.
Together with Ellis Dee, Richard Thake and Nick 'Newton' Scott, Rennie formed Rhythm Section, which played breakbeat house, the precursor to hardcore in the early 90s.
Rennie was voted 'Most Valuable/Influential Person' at The International Breaks Awards four years in a row. He has played a key role in spreading styles as diverse as Detroit house in Europe, the breakbeat revival and the funk renaissance.
