The musical is based on Frederic Morton?s ?The Last Waltz?, which tells a story already familiar to most Hungarians: the passionate, romantic relationship of the Hapsburg Crown Prince Rudolf and Mary Vetsera, and its tragic end. Rudolf, whose life has been torn asunder because of insufferable conflict and an unhappy marriage, finds love with a young baroness. But the emperor forbids his heir this joy and the affair ends tragically at the hunting lodge in Mayerling.
The production is the result of an international effort of the Budapest Operetta Theatre, Vienna?s Vereinigten Bühnen Company and the Szegedi Szabadtéri Játékok Company.
Jack Murphy, the Tony Award-winning composer of ?Jekyll and Hyde?, has often worked with lyricist and composer Jack Murphy. Their best-known musicals include ?Swing?, ?The Civil War? and ?Sliver Dollar?. Miklós Gábor Kerényi has directed well-received Hungarian productions of musicals such as ?Romeo and Juliet?, ?Elisabeth? and ?Mozart!?. In the starring roles of his newest production are Attila Dolhai and Bernadett Vágó.
After the Budapest Operetta Theatre?s world premiere of ?Rudolf?, the musical will be performed at an open stage in Szeged?s Cathedral Square on June 28.
