Painter Pál Gerzson Dies at 77

Pál Gerzson

Gerzson was born in the village of Hird in Baranya County in 1931. He studied at Budapest's Art Academy under János Kmetty, Endre Domanovszky and Gyula Hincz between 1949 and 1953. His first solo exhibition was in 1954. It was followed by solo shows at the Ernst Museum in 1967, the Műcsarnok in 1982 and the Vigadó Gallery in 1993. Gerzson's most important works can be seen in collections in Budapest, Pécs, Győr, Baja, Kunszentmiklós, Mátészalka and Helsinki.

 
Gerzson taught at the Academy of Applied Arts between 1960 and 1974. Afterward, he took a position at the Academy of Fine Art, where he served as department head from 1986 until his retirement in 1990.
 
 

After his retirement Gerzson was appointed chairman of the Association of Hungarian Fine and Applied Artists. He was also made a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.

 
In 1992, he was one of 22 founding members of the Hungarian Art Academy.
 
Gerzson was awarded the Mihály Munkácsy Prize in 1969 and 1971. He was presented the Artist of Merit Prize in 1986. 
 
A new exhibition of Gerzson's works opened in Gödöllő recently, on the occasion of the artist's 77th birthday.
