Pál Bokor Publishes New Book on Hollywood Stars

The 197-page tome is the final instalment in a three-part series that started with The Name of Success: Oscar and continued with The Place of Success: Hollywood.

The book, published by Atlantic Press, follows the history of film stars from the dawn of Hollywood. Among those featured are Peter Lorre, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Mary Pickford, Angelina Jolie and Javier Bardem.

Bokor said his personal preference had decided which stars from "the incredibly large Hollywood Galaxy" to include in the book.  "I reserve the right to get it wrong," he said, adding that if at least 30 of the 47 "fixed stars" he picked for the book remained fixtures in the public mind, he would be proven right.

Bokor, who has written about film for more than 30 years, said he was working on a comprehensive aesthetic study of film but still needed to find a way to finance its publication.

Bokor said his attraction to film began when he was about eight, at a time when only Soviet and Hungarian films were shown in Hungary. He travelled to the USA as a correspondent for the Hungarian News Agency (MTI) and first reported on the Academy Awards ceremony in 1980.

Bokor said the reason he had set out to write a trilogy on Hollywood was not his admiration of Hollywood films. According to Bokor, 95 percent of Hollywood films are impossible to evaluate from an artistic point of view and around 50 percent are not even entertaining.

"One must admit that Hollywood has not advanced the world," Bokor said. Still, it is important to know the Hollywood galaxy because nobody remains unaffected by its influence, he added.
