Pécs Diocese Renovates for Anniversary

English

The renovations will start next week and finish by the end of May.

Support for the renovation of the three buildings, which stand on Pécs's Dom Square, came from the Norwegian Fund, said Pécs Diocese chief architect Miklós Kóbor. Specialists will replace elements of the facades of the Bishop's Palace and the archive, re-plaster the walls and paint them.

The walls of the basilica will be cleaned with high-pressure water sprayers. After damaged elements on the facade are replaced, the entire exterior will be treated with a special substance to keep it clean for another 50 years.

The walls of the basilica are made from three different types of sandstone. Building experts are trying to determine where to get the replacement stone, Kóbor said.

The diocese also wants to rebuild the Dom Square, replacing its old cobblestones with more modern paving stones, but for now the money is lacking, Kóbor said.
