A proposal by Pécs Mayor Péter Tasnádi to restructure the Pécs2010 Management Centre, the company organising events and investments for the city's programme in 2010, and dismiss András Mészáros was approved by a large majority of council members.

Tasnádi said Mészáros's dismissal was justified by a loss of confidence, delays in the investment projects, insufficient revenue from sponsors and a negative public image of the programme. Pécs has been unable to shake off the "negative spiral of news reports" which surround the preparations for the European Capital of Culture project, he said.

Mészáros's post will be eliminated and Csaba Ruzsa, financial director of the Pécs2010 Management Centre, will take over as the centre's managing director.

Mészáros was embittered by his dismissal but said he was proud of the work done by his team over the past 16 months.
