Gyugyi offered to sell his collection at a steep discount at recent talks with Pécs mayor Zsolt Páva. The collector said he wanted the pieces to remain together and be accessible to Pécs residents and visitors.
The city will make a big effort to raise the money to purchase the collection, said local council official János Girán, without revealing any further details.
The Hungarian businessman Dezső Matyi had earlier planned to buy the collection, but backed out because of the global economic and financial crisis.
