Pécs 2010 European Capital of Culture programme director AndrásMészáros, Pécs mayor Péter Tasnádi and Ferenc Keller, a resident ofPécs and designer of The Hive.

A jury of professionals picked the names from more than 300 proposals, Mészáros said. The main criteria for selection dictated that the names should serve to make the buildings better known and be easy to translate into foreign languages.

The concert hall, to cost about HUF 6 billion, will be situated near the city centre. Though its main function will be to host classical music concerts, it has been designed to be easily transformed into a conference centre. Many of the city's musical ensembles are expected to use the venue in addition to the Pécs Philharmonic.

The HUF 4.5 billion Hive will integrate the city and county libraries as well as the library of the local university. It will serve as a meeting place as well as a resource for students and researchers.

Opus2010 and The Hive are two of four big projects, costing a combined HUF 45 billion, that Pécs plans for 2010. The other two are the overhaul of the area around the city's famous Zsolnay porcelain factory to create a cultural quarter and the renovation of the city's parks and main squares.
