"By losing POSZT, we would lose an early summer pilgrimage spot, outstanding performances and great meetings and talks between people," Hiller said, asking the audience to treasure POSZT together and see to it the tradition lives on.

POSZT has become a Pécs trademark, Pécs mayor Péter Tasnádi said, adding that he hoped the city could host the 10th POSZT when the city takes the European Capital of Culture title in 2010.

Sixteen theatre productions - selected by the writer Endre Kukorelly - are in competition at this year's ten-day POSZT festival, said director Tamás Jordán. Outside of the competition, more than 260 theatre and musical performances, exhibitions and talks are on the programme.
