The Pécs National Theatre, the Pécs University Medical School foyer and the city's synagogue will be used as alternative venues for events on the European Capital of Culture 2010 programme, said Deputy Mayor Bertalan Tóth.
The city plans to spend HUF 300-350 million for new sound and light equipment at the national theatre as well as to reinforce the balcony. Between HUF 60 million and HUF 80 million will be spent to improve the acoustics of the foyer at the medical school. HUF 400 million will go toward a renovation of the synagogue's interior.
Half of the funding will come from money originally allocated for a renovation of Pécs's Indóház Square.
Plans to build a concert hall, convert the area around the Zsolnay Porcelain Factory into a cultural quarter and establish a regional knowledge and information centre have suffered setbacks, but construction of the concert hall is expected to start in late April or early May.
