Márton Méhes, who is in charge of cultural preparations for the title, said the city was waiting for the approval of the Ministry of Education and Culture on HUF 380 million in funding for the project.
On the programme are initiatives by civil organisations and local residents, seminars, and events that foster links between Pécs and its European Capital of Culture 2010 partner cities: Essen and Istanbul, Méhes said. They include concerts, festivals and conferences. A Balkan world music festival is planned, as is a European youth music festival, slated to take place in the second half of May. The events will help Pécs prepare for 2010, Méhes added.
The European Capital of Culture 2010 project has a budget of HUF 45 billion, of which HUF 9 billion will be used to cover operating costs. The rest will be spent on development projects. Financing will come from the European Union and the state, as well as the local government and sponsors.
