Photo exhibit showcases Native Americans

English

The sixty images depict the daily life, rituals, trades and crafts and the culture of the Hopi, Navajo and Apache tribes, many of them showing portraits of chieftains and elders.

The pictures were taken by American photographer-ethnographer Edward S. Curtis, who had spent thirty years from 1906 documenting the life and culture of these tribes. His technique was to etch his photos chemically into a copper covered printing plate that produced exciting brown-shaded images.

The exhibition entitled "Sacred Legacy: Edward S. Curtis and The North American Indian" was opened by US Ambassador April H. Foley and will run until July 10.
