Faludy (1910-2006) "remained Hungarian while being a global citizen and his patriotism perfectly complemented his dedication to democratic values," Gyurcsany said in front of the building in central Budapest where Faludy lived between 1996 and 2003.
Culture Minister Istvan Hiller, deputy Budapest mayor Csaba Horvath, Faludi's widow, the poet Fanni Faludy, and poet Geza Szocs, all placed wreaths.
Faludi emigrated from Hungary twice, in 1938 and 1956, but returned after the change of the system in 1989. He received the Kossuth Prize in 1994 and the Grand Cross of the Republic of Hungary's Order of Merit posthumously in 2006.
