?Today, the Venice Commission has progressed from its role of helping with the transition to democracy to the nurturing and development of the common traditions of European constitutionalism,? said Sólyom, citing examples of constitutional issues from ?old and experienced? democracies that have been on the Commission?s agenda.
The president said the Venice Commission had become an ?institution of global influence?.
?The globalization of its activity clearly shows that European constitutionality ? though a great part of it is rooted in American constitutionality ? has evolved its own specific features in many areas ? such as the protection of human dignity and freedom of speech ? and alongside the United States it has become the other model setting a global example,? Sólyom said.
?Even though its opinions are advisory, the Venice Commission is the international forum that can elaborate on both individual rights and the principles under which democracy operates,? the president said.
The president acknowledged the work of the Commission?s present and former heads and wished its members ?continued joint success?and?joyful activity.?
