Renovated Zsolnay Museum Reopens

Culture and patrons of culture belong to the economy of the 21st century too, Szili said at the opening ceremony. If we fail to care for culture, which is a part of our lives, and do not pass it on to the next generation, our existence remains unfulfilled.

She said the renovation and reopening of the Zsolnay Museum, a showcase for some of the Zsolnay porcelain factory's finest works from the 19th and 20th centuries, shows there is a future for culture.

Júlia Fabényi, who heads all of the museums in Baranyai County, where Pécs is located, said earlier that the renovation of the museum cost HUF 415 million. Most of the cost was covered by government funding. The renovation involved reinforcing the structure of the building, plastering the walls, creating a loft space and expanding the exhibition space, allowing more of the museum's collection to be displayed in a modern, well lit, air-conditioned area.

The building, which was constructed in 1324, has housed the museum's 12,000 pieces of porcelain and 8,000 design sketches and other documents since 1955. About 73,000 people visit the museum each year.
