The restored Reök Palace in Szeged, one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in Europe, is to accommodate a regional arts centre. The building, designed by Ede Magyar, is expected to become one of Hungary's most important cultural centres. Photo: György Németh (MTI) |
Visual art exhibitions will be the core activity of the centre, but it will also offer musical, literary and theatrical events, said the centre's director Tamás Herczeg.
An exhibition of works by Goya and another of contemporary Szeged-based artists will be the first events to be hosted by the centre, which will open its doors on August 17.
The Goya exhibition, entitled Beauty and Pain, will present the artist's Capriccio series, of some 80 paintings and etchings. Visitors to the exhibition will also see a series of graphic works by William Blake and ten paintings by the Hungarian artist Béla Kondor.
The other exhibition will show works, including paintings, sculptures and other media, by more than 30 local artists. All of the works are in some way connected to contemporary trends in Hungary or elsewhere in Europe, said art historian Róbert Nátyi.
The Reök Palace will also offer a literary "suite", to be managed by the writer Szilárd Podmaniczky, and an opera suite, which will be overseen by the conductors Tamás Pál and Gergely Kesselyák. It will host chamber theatre productions, as well as talks in cooperation with the University of Szeged.
